La Juventud Nacionalista de Cataluña le ha pedido que cante 'Whe shall overcome' en Barcelona, uno de los lemas de los esclavos negros que reivindicaban su liberación, para apoyar al nacionalismo
Apreciado Bruce:
Nadie como un músico sabe manejar el lenguaje universal de los seres humanos: el de las emociones. La música, en tanto que trabaja con razones y emociones, no tiene fronteras.
Lo cierto es que no teníamos intención de escribirte. Pero no hemos podido evitarlo al ver que la Juventud Nacionalista de Cataluña te ha pedido que cantes “Whe shall overcome” en Barcelona, uno de los lemas de los esclavos negros que reivindicaban su liberación, para dar soporte a su campaña nacionalista.
En realidad, lo que hacen es un juego retórico para comparar la abolición de la esclavitud (banalizando una de las atrocidades más aberrantes del ser humano) con sus objetivos nacionalistas. Sólo por esa razón, a las JNC debería caérseles la cara de vergüenza. Porque su proyecto político nada tiene que ver con la libertad humana y su emancipación, pero sí con el conservadurismo, con la opresión y los modelos autoritarios de todos los nacionalismos europeos; incluido el viejo nacionalismo españolista de Franco. Porque al final, tanto el nacional-catolicismo de Franco como el nacional-catalanismo que sostiene la JNC se basan en la misma obsesión nacional. Y es que las prácticas llevadas a cabo por el partido de la JNC a lo largo de 23 años en el gobierno regional han sido absolutamente antiliberales y antidemocráticas. Si alguien tuviese que cantar “Whe shall overcome”, seríamos nosotros respecto a ellos.
Son antiliberales porque han atacado sistemáticamente los derechos de los ciudadanos, porque habiendo dos lenguas oficiales impusieron una sobre otra impidiendo estudiar en español (lengua de más de la mitad de la población catalana) discriminándolos así en función de su lengua principal. Unas políticas que causaron, por ejemplo, el exilio de más de 15.000 profesores que no pudieron soportar la presión de los nacionalistas en los años ochenta. Son antiliberales porque han impuesto sanciones a quienes no rotulan su comercio en la lengua impuesta (aunque lo hagan en una que es igualmente oficial). Son antidemócratas porque no respetan ni acatan las resoluciones judiciales, ni al Tribunal Constitucional. Son antisocialistas porque destinan grandes cantidades de dinero público a lo anteriormente expuesto en detrimento de la sanidad, de la educación y de los servicios sociales. Son antisocialistas porque en lugar de igualar pretenden diferenciar; porque en lugar de unir quieren separar.
En cambio, nuestro sueño no es separar. No queremos crear fronteras donde ahora no las hay, no queremos confrontación donde puede haber convivencia. Nosotros creemos que hay que romper fronteras, que hay que avanzar hacia Europa y tratar de mejorar las condiciones de vida de los seres humanos en el mundo entero, sin que importe de que país sean o que lengua hablen. Esa es nuestra quimera.
Por ello, nosotros te pedimos que dediques el concierto a la humanidad. Que cantes “Whe shall overcome” a la fraternidad de los seres humanos y a aquellos que luchan contra las injusticias, contra las desigualdades, contra las tensiones sociales y contra la opresión. Deseamos que algún día no muy lejano “we'll walk hand in hand”.

Nobody knows better than a musician like you how to handle the universal language of the human beings, language of the emotion. Since it goes through reasons and emotion, there are no borders for music.
Actually, we had not planned to write to you. But we could not help doing it when we noticed that the JNC (Nationalist Youth of Catalonia) leaders had asked you to sing "We shall overcome" in Barcelona, one of the mottos of the black slaves claiming for freedom, to mean support to their new nationalist campaign.
In fact, it is just a rhetorical trick to promote their nationalist, inegalitarian objectives by comparing them to abolition of slavery. Only this tricky banalisation of slavery -one of the most horrible humankind atrocities- and freedom fights should make the young nationalists from JNC severy ashamed. Mainly, because their political project is not related to human freedom and emancipation, but to regressive, oppressive and even authoritarian models from all the European nationalisms, including the old Franco's Spanish nationalism. In the end, both national-catholicism from Franco and national-catalanism sponsored by the JNC supporters share the same National obsession. And these are the policies that have been carried out by the party of these JNC leaders (CiU) along the 23 years in which CiU had lead the regional Catalan government: definitely anti-liberal and non-democratic. That is to us, the people of Catalonia, to overcome the discrimination, own-profit, conflict-making policies from nationalism supporters.They are non-democratic because they have systematically attacked citizens rights by excluding Spanish, language of more than half of the Catalan population, confronting it to Catalan, preventing students to study in Spanish and discriminating people because of their main language. These policies have caused, for instance, the departure in the eighties of more than 15,000 teachers unable to overcome the pressure of nationalists. They are non-democratic because they have punished those using Spanish -and not Catalan- in their own shops and business (although both languages are official). They are non-democratic because they do not respect and accept neither the judicial resolutions, nor the democratic Constitutional Court. They are anti-liberal because they spend huge amounts of regional Budget to promote confrontation at the expense of public services such as health system, education and other social services. They are anti-liberal because they encourage social tensions more than promote equality; because they prefer the divide people and not to put them together.
In contrast, our dream is not to separate. We do not want to create new borders, but to try to overcome the existing ones; we do not want to confront but to strengthen convivence. Rather than building new walls, we wish to tear them down, building new fraternity spaces, encouraging the process to European and world-wide unification, thus improving life conditions of people, no matter which country they come from, no matter which language they use. That is our dream.
That is why we would like you to dedicate the concert to the humanity. We would like you to sing "We shall overcome", dedicate it to fraternity of people and to those fighting and rejecting projects based on inequalities, social tensions and people oppression. And let's hope that in a near future "we'll walk walk hand in hand".
